Berg had thought that nothing could relieve the deep sense of unease that had nagged at him all day, but he was wrong. She did, for a while.

He’d also thought that no woman had the power to really excite him anymore, but he was wrong about that too. For a while.

She was shy at first, almost as if she were inexperienced, and it suddenly occurred to him that she hadn’t had a lover since her husband had died.

The thought was strangely arousing. So too was her curious mixture of reticence and sensuality. She seemed uncertain, even nervous; he felt her tremble. He had the urge to reawaken her, to see her lose control and cry out and beg him to satisfy her.

He took it slowly, gently, one step at a time, finding each sensitive point, touching, licking, kissing, closing his mind to everything but the sensation of her.

Then, quite suddenly, her reticence vanished and her movements were urgent, demanding, knowing. He felt vaguely disappointed, even let down. Had the shyness been a pretense?

Pushing the thought from his mind, he concentrated on taking his own pleasure, losing himself in the sensations of his own body. He whispered a demand; she hesitated slightly, then obeyed. He whispered a second demand, adding soft words of affection, and she did that too. And then he knew there was almost nothing she wouldn’t do for him, and he abandoned himself to the rapacious hunger of his senses that, much as he fed it, was never satisfied.

When it was over. Berg fought off the sense of emptiness and futility that he dreaded, but it crept up on him surreptitiously, pulling him down and down, until he thought bitterly: Why does it always have to be like this?

Ragna stirred beside him, soft and acquiescent and slightly damp from their lovemaking. He thought: She wasn’t different after all. He felt disappointed, even slightly resentful.

Yet he hadn’t had enough of her, not by a long way.

There was also the matter of the Delta business. She wouldn’t break his trust, he knew that. At the same time it would be best to keep an eye on her until this little problem with Sonja had sorted itself out.

Sonja.

He’d had her on his mind all evening.

Tonight he’d failed to show up, but that was no solution. He had to know the truth. He had to find out if they were on to him.

The question was: how?
